What does Codesign look like in Practice? The clinician must feel comfortable that they are collecting the correct information and recording it accurately to prevent quality of care issues. As such, it is essential to accurately capture clinical data so that it is used correctly in a multitude of ways to ensure quality care. The information they collect gets used by numerous persons within the organisation, from management to the coding department. Jeff noted that nurses and technicians are the primary users of EMRs and DMRs. They work through the workflows so that by the time they see the solution, itвЂ™s something that replicates what they already do, including any changes and improvements they wanted to put in place. Its representatives spend a lot of time at the front end, sitting down with the clinicians. The company does not go in and disrupt the environment. Implementing an EMR removes all of that and forces new practices, which are met with much resistance. So they become very personal, and the ownership of those forms is very strong. Of note, most forms have forms committees that meet periodically because forms have to comply with regulatory requirements that change over time. There is also a need for massive change management. Is that concept about people and not technology? The traditional electronic medical records changed work practice, clinical workflows and the way clinical information was recorded, disseminated, and stored. Jeff explained that looking at the value proposition evolution of these technologies is also quite intriguing. For example, electronic health records take a subset of patient information and make that accessible across a region. Jeff explained the different acronyms are sometimes used interchangeably to talk about the same thing, but it is more than semantics, and there are significant differences among these systems. Jeff asserted that InfoMedix facilitates being able to collect patient data from various systems and segments, then put that into a single patient-focused digital chart that can then be easily accessed by people who need to access that information. The modern EMRs, like InfoMedix, are digitising forms that hold the clinical information and store it so that it is easily accessible and interoperates with other solutions, making it relevant to different care sectors. As such, electronic medical records operate well within the four walls of the hospital but donвЂ™t interoperate well with the evolved solutions outside of the hospital.

Jeff pointed out that the traditional EMRs had no need to interoperate, and they focused on the acute space. He explained that we frequently lose sight of what technology is supposed to accomplish, such as improving workflows and providing better patient outcomes. Jeff shared that the primary concept is technology is about people. Jeff led Cerner into Australia and an expansion into Singapore and Malaysia. Shortly after arriving in Australia over thirty years ago, he got approached to fill the managing directorвЂ™s post at Cerner.
